How to start tracing your cultural heritage
Begin with the people closest to you. Ask parents, grandparents and older relatives where the family lived, which languages were spoken, which festivals and foods mattered, and how family names were chosen. Record these conversations and write down the exact spellings of names and places, because spelling often changes across generations and borders.
Next, gather documents such as birth, marriage and baptismal records, old photographs, letters and passports. Local archives, churches, mosques and community groups often hold records that never reached the internet. DNA tests can add clues about regions, but they describe genetic ancestry, which is different from culture, language and tradition.
