Names, migration and the African diaspora

For many descendants of enslaved Africans, family names were changed or erased, and records can be incomplete. Colonial rule and missionary registration also replaced many African names with European ones. This means a surname often reflects history imposed on a family rather than where it came from.

Researchers combine oral history, plantation and church records, shipping and census documents, and community archives to rebuild family stories. If your name does not match your family’s own account of its origins, trust the family account and keep investigating.
